Cupping is an ancient form of medical treatment to increase blood flow, loosen fascia and connective tissue, and stimulate healing. Plastic cups are placed on the skin and suction is applied to facilitate circulation and mobilize the affected tissue. It is common for redness to appear after cupping due to the induced microtrauma that allows the body to repair itself. Cupping can be used to treat painful or sore muscles, muscle pain, poor range of motion, and overall well being. |
Cupping FAQs
Q: What does cupping feel like?
A: There are different techniques used with cupping but the main sensation is suction. Cupping, like massage, depends on the amount of pressure a client requests so it may be comforting or it may be deep. Cups may be used to glide or may be stationary.
Q: Will I have red marks?
A: You can expect to have at least some red marks due to the purpose that cupping is meant to create microtrauma for tissue healing. You may request to have less red marking and less suction will be applied. Red marks should disappear within 1-2 weeks depending on the person/treatment.
Q: Does the bruising hurt?
A: Cupping is not like a regular bruise where lots of tissue and vascular damage has occurred. The skin will feel tight while the tissue heals, and range of motion will be greater.
Q: Can anyone get cupping?
A: Certain conditions do not allow for cupping such as pregnant persons and those with blood disorders. Speak with your RMT to see if cupping can help you.
